How to Get More SEO Traffic Using These 2 Simple Tweaks

Let's face it, Google can be a nice source of traffic.

I've been doing SEO for the past 8 years. And when you actually see organic traffic picking up, it's just priceless.

On this post, I'll show you 2 simple steps to increase your SEO traffic without working your ass off.

You see, many SEOs (including myself in the past) use to obsess about rankings.

I see this time and time again. They pick a keyword and they work their day in and day out to get to Google's page 1.

And this is a quite arbritrary process.

From the get go, you don't know if that keyword or group of keywords will bring more sales.

If it will actually help you getting the clients you want.

Or even make your business move forward.

Based on tools like Google Keyword Planner (which is a PPC tool, not a SEO tool), you can make the wrong choice.

And this can be a costly mistake on the long run.

So instead of focusing on keywords and rankings, I propose that we focus on the following:

Traffic, not Rankings

Our main goal as SEOs should be increasing our website's traffic.

And conversions, of course, but that's for another post.

Google has advanced a lot over the past couple of months.

Let's not talk about years.

Now it's really hard to predict which keyword will bring in the most revenue.

I mean, you can go to Keyword Planner or any other tool and check the monthly searches.

But that doesn't mean those rankings will give you more sales or more clients.

In fact, most of the time, long tail keywords are the ones that will generate most of the sales in your website.

Think about this for a second:

People search as they speak  and think.

That's why the whole Google Hummingbird came along.

To try to understand what people meant with phrases like “What's the best Pizza place near me?”.

If you're trying to rank for “pizza”, you can get a ton of traffic, but little to no sales.

In fact, it happened to a client of mine.

His website sells spionage gadgets and countermeasures for governments.

And he was ranking really well for the keyword “hidden cameras”.

You could imagine that he was getting a ton of traffic, but little to no sales.

Most of his traffic where coming for the naughty side of the search!

Once we discovered this issue we opimized his website to some other product searches.

Being more specific queries, the traffic went down.

But the sales shoot through the roof!

So keywords can be a double edged sword.

When you focus on traffic instead of rankings you can leverage on a ton of more keywords.

And visitors that come from long tails are usually further ahead in the sale process.

Plus, with the two steps that I'll show you here you can rank for a boatload of long tail keywords.

So let's begin…

Step 1: Get your Onsite Right

Most of the time you don't need more backlinks to rank higher.

If you're ranked on positions 20-50 on Google, you already have some authority.

You have some internal linkjuice ready to be optimized.

I see a lot of SEOs building more backlinks just because they want to push a website to page 1.

And that's the hardest route.

Instead, I like to focus on those things that I can control.

Like internal linkjuice and On Site optimization.

In fact, I'd even say that you can rank 80% of the time with a good On Site SEO and less backlinks.

If you have a poor On Site SEO, you will need 200% the amount of links (which means more time, money and effort to get them).

So here are some tweaks you can make to your Onsite SEO to make it better.

Silo Your Website

The best way to manage and manipulate your internal linkjuice is to Silo your website.

When we talk about silos, it's just the way pages link to each other within the site.

Usually, silos are created using contextual links (not menus or sidebar links).

And you want to keep your silos relevant.

For example, if you have a website about shoes, your homepage will have Shoes related content.

Your silo heads (or categories) will talk about Red Shoes, Blue Shoes and Yellow Shoes.

Each page or post (within each silo) will have content about Red Boots, Red Flip Flops, etc.

You don't have to overthink this.

The main point is that relevant pages link to other relevant pages.

You might want to layout the entire content of your site first on a piece of paper, before getting to work.

But what happens when you have a small website (7-10 pages)?

You can create a Monosilo.

A monosilo means daisychaining the pages with contextual links.

The last page of the monosilo will link back to the homepage.

Is that simple.

Check your Keyword Density

This is not 2001 anymore guys.

Google has become smarter and can actually “read” your content.

And by reading I mean that it understands that “shoes”, “boots” and “sneakers” are all part of the same niche.

So you don't need to repeat “Red Shoes” all over the place to rank for it.

In fact, I'd suggest that you have your keyword just twice on your page:

  • In your URL
  • In your Page Title

That's it!

For Headers, Bolds, Italics, Metatags, etc., you can use synonims and reocurring words.

And don't forget to mention your brand several times on the pots or pages.

Enhance and Enrich your Content

This goes hand in hand with the previous point.

You need to write for your visitor, not for Google.

Overoptimizing or placing thin content on your site will get you penalized.

Not only that, but you won't generate any sales either! (which should be your end goal anyways).

So if you have a ton of 400 words articles in your site, it's time to enhance them and enrich them.

Make your content longer, less optimized, and have tons of Call to Actions.

That way people can actually enjoy your website.

That will translate into more views, more time on site, more social signals and more rankings.

Think about the visitor when placing content on your site, not Google.

And make the content easy to read and easy to sale.

Use Rich Media

Google owns YouTube.

Google has been indexing more of Twitter over the past months.

Google loves Pinterest post.

Google owns Drive where you can create interactive Forms and Presentations.

Do you see a patern here?

Google loves rich media!

Rich media are videos, images, embedded tweets and slideshows, etc.

Use them!

Insert Tweets, Videos, Google Plus posts, Slideshare presentations, etc., in your posts.

They will increase your content quality and also will improve the relevance of your page.

Use rich media to further ellaborate on your content and you'll be rewarded.

It doesn't matter that the video, the tweet or the post that you are embedding are not yours.

Worse case scenario you'll be linking back to a relevant website, which takes me to the next point.

Link Out to Authorities

I can't stress this enough.

Linking to other authority or relevant sites is the best On Site SEO strategy I can think of right now.

You see, Google will benefit those websites that make its job easier.

And one of the big tasks of Google is to index and interconnect the entire Web.

For that, it uses robots (also called spiders) to scrape and make “maps” of links within its database.

Without getting too technical here, Google will reward your website if you're linking to other sites.

Even further if these sites are authoritative and relevant.

Wikipedia is a good example. But it's being overused right now.

There are a ton of websites out there that have also addressed the same topic you want to talk about.

So search for and link out to them.

One good place to find authoritative websites to link to is Google News.

Search for your Keywords and you'll get a ton of relevant sites to link to

These are also websites that Google deems worthy enough so as to index them as news.

So link back to them and to other big blogs in your industry.

Many bloggers will return the favor.

And you will see an increase in rankings and metrics.

If you have a local website, good ideas are local councils, fairs, events, etc.

Main point being: Link out and don't look back!

Write More Blog posts

Remember I told you that you already have a ton of linkjuice that's flowing through your website?

The more pages your website has, the more linkjuice it will generate.

If you're trying to take a stubborn page from position 15 to 5, just write more blog posts.

And link back from those posts to the page you want to rank.

This is a surefire way to powerup pages that you want to push higher, without building more backlinks.

If you have also siloed your site correctly, these extra posts will help your entire website rank.

Not to talk about the extra value you're providing to the visitor.

Step 2: Use Your Tier 1 to Sell

If you're not sure about what a Tier is, here is a great tutorial of Matthew Woodward on tiered linkbuilding.

Basically, your Tier 1 links are those websites that are pointing directly to your money site.

You can then power up these websites by building links to your backlinks.

But that's another story.

I see many SEOs trying to crack the code of the perfect backlink.

In my opinion, the perfect backlink should be:

  • A Backlink that brings traffic to your site.
  • A Backlink that has good metrics (authority).
  • A Backlink that is relevant to the topic of your site.

Note that I put traffic at the top.

Everytime I build a Tier 1 backlink, I focus on not only rankings, but traffic (rings any bell?).

So think about all the backlinks opportunities you have that will also generate traffic.

Some good ones are:

  • Social Media
  • Other Blogs
  • Forums and Communities
  • Press Releases
  • Web 2.0s and Parasites
  • Feeder Sites
  • Videos, Documents, Presentations
  • Editorial Links
  • Etc

All  these links are great Tier 1 links because they will allow you to bring traffic to your site.

You need to have in mind that your Tier 1 should be pristine.

Stop worrying about spun content or garbage properties linking back to your money site.

Additional Landing Pages

I like to treat my Tier 1 Links as extra landing pages.

That is pages that can actually generate a sale, a subscriber or a new customer.

Let's take your Google plus Page for example.

You can make a sale right there and then, if it's opimized with strong Call to Actions and branded enough.

Same happens with a Press Release that you could submit.

Or an editorial link.

They can all sell for you.

But you need to brand them properly, add value with good quality content and have strong call to actions.

So when you are thinking on building your next Tier 1 link, ask yourself this question:

“Will This Backlink Help me to Sell?”

If it will, then go ahead and build it.

If it won't, don't even bother.

That's why I don't use spun content or crappy properties on my tier 1 backlinks.

And why I try to keep everything branded, nice and tidy.

Remember that your Tier 1s should be extentions of your brands.

Bonus Step: Build your Email List

This doesn't entirely relate to SEO, but it's super important.

Once you have implemented the steps before, you will definitely notice a bump in traffic.

Thus, better organic rankings.

However, you'll be leaving a ton of money in the table if you are not reinvesting that new traffic.

That's when building an email list comes into play.

You can use all that new traffic you're getting to build an even most important asset: your email list.

You'll be surprised of how many SEOs seem to be waiting for Google to come and hit them.

Like I mentioned on this post, you don't have a sustainable business if you don't have an email list.

So if you are growing your SEO traffic, why don't you get an autorresponder and start gathering emails?

This will help you giving away value, creating rapport with your list and turn into a better marketer.
